What is Therapy?


Counselling Therapists practise a "talking cure" - which generally means that you talk and they listen. Your story will be reflected back in a way that helps you to make sense of what's going on and make connections between different parts of your story. Different perspectives that you may not have considered will be offered, and you will be encouraged to explore issues a bit more deeply.

Therapy has been proven to reduce anxiety and assist in resilience in dealing with specific life issues, or in coping with and managing existing situations.

You may hace choosen Therapy in order to focus on a specific issue that you are struggling with in your life and to look at ways in which to cope or view things from a different perspective. Alternatively you may have come to Therapy because things just don't seem right and you want to explore how you are in the world as opposed to dealing with one particular issue in isolation. Counselling Therapists have been specifically trained in creating a safe, long-term space where deeper issues can be explored and processed.

Peope often come to Therapy to deal with particular problems, but then choose to continue their explorations as a way of making their lives richer and more meaningful.

Whilst there are many different theories and trainings, research suggests that the quality of the relationship that the client and therapist can build between them is more important than the type of therapy. Therefore you don't necessarily need to know anything about the different approaches to therapy before choosing a therapist.
